English Functional Skills Entry Level 1
Qualification Purpose Functional Skills qualifications in English are designed to provide learners with essential language skills that are relevant, practical, and applicable to real-world contexts. Level 2 Basic Life Support (Adults and Children) (Half a day Course)
Course Overview/Aims This qualification has been developed for those individuals looking to learn basic life support for adults and children. The qualification may support a role in a workplace across any industry, particularly health care, or those participating in any form of social, leisure or sporting activities. Valid for 1 year Minimum age 14
Level 2 Essential First Aid (1 Day Course)
Qualification objective/Aim The purpose and objective of this qualification is to allow learners, who may be unable to meet the HSE requirements for competently providing first aid, an opportunity to demonstrate emergency first aid knowledge and skills. Skills may be demonstrated by learner providing clear instructions, including feedback to a bystander. This qualification can be taken as an alternative to Emergency First Aid at Work, where learners cannot be relied upon to be a sole first aider, but are still able to provide first aid by proxy. Valid for 3 years. Suitable from age 10+
Level 2 Food Safety
Course Overview This qualification is designed to prepare learners for employment in environments where food is prepared, handled, or served. It is based on the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for food safety in a catering setting and aligns with the best practice guidelines recommended by the Food Standards Agency. Successful completion of this course ensures that learners—and their employers—can demonstrate compliance with legal training requirements in food safety. At our unit in Millom, or at your premises where you have a suitable room. We’re an approved centre for QNUK and Open Awards, both regulated by Ofqual.

First Aid at Work is 18 hours of teaching, Emergency First Aid at Work six hours, and Responding to Anaphylactic Reactions four, each with the assessment on top. Certificates are valid for three years — renewal training must be sat before the current certificate expires, so we’d suggest booking around six weeks ahead.

Food Safety for Catering is six hours of teaching plus a one-hour exam; Food Allergen Awareness is four hours plus half an hour. The two are often booked together on the same day.

Functional Skills English & Maths
Open Awards Functional Skills at Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 — for adults and young people aged 11 and over. Teaching is quoted at the tutoring rate opposite.
Resits are charged for. We’ll always tell a learner before an entry is made.
Tutoring, support & invigilation
One-to-one or small-group teaching outside a scheduled course, including exam preparation and support for learners who need additional time.
We work with a lot of neurodivergent learners, and adjustments are planned in from the start rather than added on.
